Product Description
Particulate traps are highly effective in reducing particulate matter (PM) emissions. Their operational mechanism involves two key stages: first, trapping PM from exhaust gases, and second, oxidizing the trapped particles to regenerate the trap.
Filter regeneration is critical because, during prolonged operation, the gradual accumulation of PM in the trap increases engine back pressure, which in turn degrades engine performance. To restore the trap’s filtering efficiency, deposited PM must be periodically removed. Regeneration methods are categorized into active regeneration and passive regeneration:

Active regeneration relies on external energy to raise the temperature inside the trap, enabling PM ignition and combustion. PM oxidizes and burns when the trap’s internal temperature reaches 550°C; below this threshold, excessive deposits can clog the trap. In such cases, external energy sources—such as electric heaters, burners, or adjustments to engine operating conditions—are used to elevate the temperature within the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and facilitate PM oxidation.

Passive regeneration reduces the ignition temperature of PM using fuel additives or catalysts, allowing particles to burn at the engine’s normal exhaust temperatures. Additives (e.g., cerium, iron, strontium) are blended into fuel in specific proportions: excessive additives may shorten the lifespan of the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), while insufficient amounts can cause delayed regeneration or require higher regeneration temperatures.
